peter sucks at life

Nietzsche’s passionate resentment for alcohol is so strong that it rivals that of his hatred for christianity. Both of these are considered narcotics in the eyes of Nietzsche because they numb pain and reassure us that life is fine just the way it is, causing us to think that we do not need to make an effort to better our lives. This is a part of Nietzsche’s teachings that is supposed to help us find our true selves.
The fictional town of Quahog is the setting for the animated comedy, Family Guy. The series is based around a dysfunctional christian family, the Griffins. The father, Peter Griffin, is an overweight man who spends a good portion of his days drinking his life away. Peter is the epitome of a terrible, unproductive human being in the eyes of Nietzsche. He is the embodiment of the sklavenmoral (slave morality) that Nietzsche discusses, he is dependent on alcohol and makes little to no effort to improve his life or that of his family’s. Peter is the ambitionless town fool that wastes all the of the family’s money on dumb ideas that never work and bring nothing but disgrace to the Griffins. Peter is a beer factory worker by day and a drunk by night leaving nearly no time for his children. He doesn’t try to fight his alcoholism at all, he just lets it control him because he is comfortable with that kind of lifestyle. He has no intentions of fighting his demons and continuously chooses to drink all of his problems away without putting up a fight.
Nine times out of ten, anything that Peter does is without proper reasoning or the intention of helping others. Peter is the opposite of the Übermensch (superman) that Nietzsche thinks that everyone should aspire to be. Most of his actions are counterproductive to the advancement of humankind, such as the time where Peter and Joe decided to make money by selling lemonade on the street. Peter had the brilliant idea of spiking the lemonade with vodka to improve the taste of the lemonade, the result? Several drunk children running around the town with several thousand fewer brain cells then they had before. Even on the rare occasion that Peter does have good intentions, it never ends well for everyone, just like the time where Peter got in a fight with the Evil Chicken. Although Peter beat the chicken and saved the town, all he really saved were the remains of the town, which was nothing but rubble and flaming buildings.
Peter Griffin is the perfect example of the opposite of everything that Nietzsche thinks that a human should be, he embodies every quality that makes a human terrible on Nietzsche’s standards. Nietzsche would likely think that Peter is possibly the furthest away from his true self than any other being on Earth. Every aspect of Peter Griffin screams “heinous human being!” in Nietzsche’s ears and Nietzsche without a doubt would shun Peter if he were here to witness the horrendous actions that Peter has committed.
